But I Do Now

It was about ten of nine Saturday night when the phone rang.  "The kids miss you. What day is better...Sunday or Monday?"

Without hesitation, I said, "Come tomorrow.  What time?"

"Not early," was my youngest step daughter's response.  "We'll see you around 12:30."

Pulling the covers up to my chin, my head reeled with what we could make for them on a cool Fall afternoon.  Since we would be entertaining three young girls, I wasn't concerned about much else.  After all, I do have Moon and Copper.

We marinated chicken tenders, which the Pres then cooked to perfection on the grill.  I made a 9x13 pan of baked macaroni and cheese, zesty carrots (made with a horseradish sauce) for my step daughter and I,  a pan of french fries for the girls (just in case), corn that we just froze over the summer and for dessert, I tried a recipe I got from my Sister...peach cobbler.

They arrived late.

Dinner was ready.

Did I know that these girls (ages 5, 6 and 11) were picky eaters?....NO

But I do now.

Did I know that these girls did not like baked macaroni & cheese?...NO

But I do now.

Did I know that these girls did not like peaches?...NO

But I do now.

Did I know that these girls did not like oatmeal raisin cookies?...NO

But I do now.

They ate the chicken, the corn and the fries, passed on dessert and then had hamburgers for supper.  When they left they were full, happy and pooped.   So were we...all of us...the Pres...me...Moon and Copper!!

Oh dear JP:
I too had to learn the hard way. All 6 of my grandchildren like different foods.
I keep it very simple when they come over.
Only Tom doesnt like the macaroni and cheese..the girls love it..and must add, so do I.
the peach cobbler sounds delic too.
Glad it all turned out well in the end.
nice menu.

The wee man is also a picky eater...he hardly eats anything. So frustrating.

Lessons learned, and just when you have them down pat, the tastes will change. But sounds like happy kids, full tummies...mission accomplished!

Grandkids are the pickiest eaters ever. I always have peanut butter and jelly on hand if all else fails.

I had to laugh at this one. Here is something else you will find....the next time they may have different favorites and dislikes!

I couldn't keep up with my grands.

Thankfully now that they are older, 12, 13, 14 and 17, they pretty much eat anything and a lot of it!

Chicken Nuggets and fries always seem to work. Chef Boy R Dee anything. PB&J and chips. I know I know...it's not so healthy but they love it.
