Just In Case
Just as I was about to head out to the gym Wednesday morning, my son called.
"Mom, I hate to bother you but Mia has a temp. Do you think you can come over and stay with her today?"
"Let me let the dogs out, brush my teeth, change real quick and I'm on my way."
Leaving the bathroom, something told me to grab my black leather backpack, which I use for overnights...just in case. I keep the necessities in it all the time...a pair of jammies along with a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, two days of my vitamins and allergy pill, brush/comb.
But it's times like this that I wish I didn't live over an hour away. It seemed to take forever to get to my sons but luckily he has the kind of job that is flexible enough to accommodate situations like this so he was able to leave for work once I arrived.
Mia ran a low grade fever Wednesday and Thursday so we focused on low-key activities. Although her appetite and mood seemed fine, my DIL her to the doctor's on Thursday afternoon. Because of her symptoms, they wanted to test for strep.
Yep...positive. She would stop being contagious after 24 hours of the antibiotic, a bubble gum flavored liquid taken for ten days to wipe out the bacterial infection.
My DIL had made arrangements to be home with Mia on Friday so Nana was hugged, thanked and able to hit the road when Daddy got home Thursday afternoon. As I left, my son said, "Mom, I'm so sorry."
When I got home and "Googled" strep, I found out a lot. Hmmm...perhaps that's why I felt so tired all week and had a bit of a scratchy throat. It didn't matter. Home now, jammies on, I skipped Tai Chi that night and the gym the next day to avoid "sharing".
Even though I'd been exposed to strep for a few days, the fact that I was able to help them out still made me feel good. Recovering nicely and no longer contagious, Mia is doing well. In fact, the little "Daisy" was seen in front of a local grocery store , selling Girl Scout Cookies.
On the drive home, I got to thinking...helping others is just part of our nature.

Do you have a "just in case" bag ready?
Comments
I am now too old to 'help out' so no bag packed these days. I did my bit for the family when my 6 grandchildren were young and enjoyed doing it.
no bag for me, have not left home since April 2007.
But 'just in case' take it easy!
I don't have a just in case bag
