Just Plain Scary
When Moon woke up Saturday morning, she was her playful, loving self. And following our normal routine, she and Copper went outside with me then came in to eat breakfast. As they stood at their feeding stations, I headed upstairs to make my breakfast while the Pres slept.
Not long after I went upstairs, I heard a loud CRASH and the scurrying and clawing of dog's toenails against the hardwood flooring. Looking down the staircase, I saw that the baby gate had fallen over. Copper was in his bed at the base of the stairs.
Up-righting the gate (which keeps Copper from coming up the stairs ever since he slipped and fell down them...a heartbreaking incident in itself!!!), I looked for Moon. She began walking toward me but was staggering.
She almost appeared as if she was drunk. Bumping into the walls and furniture, panting heavily and looking disoriented, she wanted "out." Moon is a Shepherd Husky mix and has to have her freedom. She hates being confined. And now she needed to be free. Placing my hands on her hips and guiding her to the door and across the patio, we came to a stop. Turning to look up at me, my heart broke as she continued to stagger making her way to the lawn.
Later that morning, I called the Vet. He believes it was Peripheral vestibular disorder...similar to vertigo in humans. He said something about the ears too but I was so happy to hear that "it is harder on the owner than the pet," and "she'll rebound nicely. She's a very healthy girl," that I didn't absorb all our conversation. He was right.
By the end of the day, she was improving tremendously and by Sunday, she was back to her old happy, playful, loving self.
