Find Your Spot
Thanks to some recent articles I read, I have now told myself that I was "one step ahead" of the crowd. The authors talked about things such as finding your own "sit spot" and
"the art of the mosey."
And me? Trend setter that I am, I claimed my own "sit spot" years ago to observe the eagles and then discovered a new one this past Summer.
Remember I told you about the "bird sanctuary" that we were working on earlier in the year? Well, now that Fall is upon us, you can get a better idea of just how much the Pres cleared. And, planted there by the birds...naturally, I might add, are some perennials such as Columbine and Persicaria Painter's Palette emerging through the ferns.
Once covered with debris and brush, within this relatively small space is a big flat rock right near the old well. This past Summer, I'd tell the Pres I was going out to "sit". It has become a place to unwind, relax and enjoy whatever takes place around me.
I also know that when I open the squeaky, hinged gate, I usually hear the chipmunk alerting all it's pals that danger is approaching at ground level. (And yes, there is a difference in their call if danger is approaching from the air.). I have learned that through observation, though I will admit that initially I thought it was my imagination!
Now grant you, I don't have far to walk to get to my "sit spot," (after all it's right in my own back yard) but it has proven to be an interesting way to learn about my surroundings. Seeing Moon and Copper waiting patiently in the yard for me to return, I now know which bird species will come to the feeders first when I'm in there, which ones are more daring and which ones need more time. It also seemed that with each "sitting," I learned something new.
And speaking of sitting, hopefully the eagles will return to nest here again enticing me to "mosey" into the woods and "sit." It seems that today everyone is always in a hurry. I mean really, when was the last time you moseyed into the woods?
Taking a leisurely walk into the woods, taking in everything around me, seeing how it interacts with it's own surroundings and me, for that matter, has proven to be such a rewarding experience.
And the list goes on if you let it. Just try it...perhaps you'll see that

- Lets face it, how many people can say they've been buzzed by a turkey?
- Or almost stepped on a brood of young turkeys while walking through the woods?
- Or been chased off by a snorting and stomping buck insisting that where you're sitting is his territory?
- Or had a Bald Eagle fly at you with it's six foot wingspan and talons opened?
- Or carried home bones in a box only to find that they were moving (thanks to the beetles)?
And the list goes on if you let it. Just try it...perhaps you'll see that
