Reputation vs Character
Saturday was another full day. Although I was not "volunteering" at an event, it seemed to end up that way. Somehow it seems that there's always room for another volunteer.
The event was a "Beaver Trail Hike" on a piece of property I've been dying to find out about. Meeting one of the Board of Directors who was key in the formation of the preserve, I was happy when he told me it was open to the public. The 600 acre parcel borders the river where the eagles have been seen and just happens to have a trail right along the river. Now, how perfect is that?

Two of the volunteers, serving as "sweeps", used tape to re-attach it for what we thought would be the remainder of the hike. Once again we began moving up the beaver trail. Quite honestly, the entire hiking party seemed to get a chuckle out of the incident revealing the talent and ingenuity of the Rangers.

The Pres had made plans to give a buddy a hand in cutting down some trees that day so, off I went...ready for a nice hike on a beautiful day. Being the first to arrive, when I saw the female leader pull in, I knew I recognized her. As she got out of her car and looked at me and I was looking at her we both pointed and said, "I've met you before." introducing my self, she smiled and said, "We met on a paddle last year. I'm so glad you're here. You're a character!"
(Hmmmm...reputation or character? This seems to be coming up a lot lately When living in VA, a good friend and I had a conversation about which is more important. Think abut it...seriously.)
More and more people arrived, along with her two helpers and two volunteers from TLGV. Bottom line is this. The hike was a great success with abut 35 people attending and although we didn't see any beavers, there was plenty of sign along the trails.
Considering all the rushing streams we had to cross were a little tricky, things were going along pretty well, until a woman toward "the back of the pack" realized that the sole was falling off of her hiking shoe.

When we came to the next body of water to cross and the woman from the rear stepped out into the open, we saw her other shoe had also fallen apart. It was time to call in the "tape squad" again.
Meeting even more people, the hike was one of a kind. The conversation was good, and trekking through the cool water was actually refreshing. Seeing the beaver trails and dams was even better. It was a memorable hike...another adventure to look back on.
So, which is more important...reputation or character?
just seeing, saying, and sharing...

Happy Monday, enjoy your day and new week!
I'd love to explore that area - even seeing signs of beavers would be good!

PS: I think most people class me as a 'bit of a character' - but I'm not sure thats a good thing!
