Sooner or Later
Calling me one day last week, the conversation between my son and I went like this...
SON: "Mom, quick question. How long does it take for birds to come to a feeder once you fill it?"
ME: "About 5-10 days once you put it out. They need time to realize it's there, and that there's a food source. Why?"
SON: "Because I filled the feeder and I haven't seen one bird. I've got squirrels, but no birds."
ME: "You mean you finally filled the feeder that's been hanging in your back yard EMPTY for years? Goob, think about it...why come if there's no food? They just got tired of waiting and moved on. Give them time...they'll come around."
Muttering and grumbling under his breath, I knew he wasn't happy with my wise answer. Yet it was the truth. He had hung the feeder up years ago but never filled it.
The evening of the Fourth of July, my son called to once again wish us Happy Anniversary. "Mom, did you get my message this morning? Why didn't you call me back? Well, listen, real quick I just ran home to pick of a few things because we're going to go watch the fireworks so I thought I'd give you another call. Hey, Mom, guess what? OMG, Mom I just saw another bird at the feeder. Oh...unless it's the same one coming back...oh no...wait, there's another one. Mom, one is like those little yellow ones you have and one seems to have a little reddish tinge to it's head but it's small. Oh, Mom, and there's a Blue Jay. Hey, I guess you were right, they just needed me to put seed in it. You know, I think I'll pick up a few more feeders."
ME: I'm still chuckling. Can you imagine how he's going to react when one of these shows up at his feeder?

The Rule of 2s is that it might take 2 seconds, 2 minutes, 2 hours, 2 days, 2 weeks, even 2 months for birds to use a new feeder! It depends on many things such as feeder placement, the type of feeder, the quality of the food, bird population in your area, weather, predators, and more.
